UPDATE December 11, 4:45 p.m.
Wauwatosa Police have provided more details into Thursday night’s officer involved shooting.
Police say the 35-year-old suspect was involved in an incident on the 7900 block of Harwood Avenue around 9:15 p.m. A witness telling police they saw a woman attacking another woman with a stick in a random and unprovoked incident.
The officer, a 23-year-old woman with nine-months experience, responded and found the suspect around Underwood Avenue and Harmonee Avenue. The suspect reportedly came at the officer’s vehicle with a wooden post and struck the windshield with it.
The officer exited the vehicle and tried to get the suspect to comply, but the suspect reportedly came at the officer with the post. This prompted the officer to fire at the suspect. The suspect continued to strike the officer’s vehicle several more times before other officers got the suspect in custody.
The suspect was taken to a hospital for surgery and treatment of injuries, and is in stable condition at last work.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
Police are also asking anyone who was in the area between 5 and 9:20 p.m. Thursday, or has video surveillance footage in the area, to contact them.
Wauwatosa Common Council President Kathleen Causier tells WTMJ the officer was not equipped with a body camera. The city is working on implementing their plan to have all officers with one in the coming weeks.
In a statement to WTMJ, Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride says, “The Wauwatosa community has experienced another difficult moment in a difficult year. We are grieving for all those involved in this unfortunate incident, including the police officers and the woman who was shot. I ask for patience, understanding, and prayers while the West Allis Police Department, which is investigating the incident, sorts through the facts.”
