Milwaukee’s top cop will continue to lead the Milwaukee Police Department for the next four years.
The city’s Fire and Police Commission voted Wednesday evening 4 to 2, with one abstention, to approve a new contract. The approval came with a required review every six months to ensure the department is following goals the commission has for them.
The first 90 minutes of the meeting consisted of comments from several dozen community members. Most spoke in favor of Morales’ reappointment, pointing to his work while in office and outreach to their parts of the Milwaukee community.
There were several people who spoke against having the FPC deciding on Morales at this time. They brought up issues regarding ongoing reviews and audits, such as the Sterling Brown arrest.
They also questioned the openness of Wednesday’s meeting. It had been decided earlier in the week that the FPC would not vote on Morales’ status prior to his current contract ending. One day later a meeting was scheduled.
A swearing in ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. inside the Common Council Chambers at Milwaukee City Hall.
