MILWAUKEE- “It’s disappointing.”
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Chancellor Mark Mone is in a celebratory mood this morning after announcing that his school’s chemistry building was in line for its first major overhaul since it was built in the 1970s, while his colleagues at campuses across the country are dealing with the fallout over a bribery scandal.
Mone tells WTMJ the admissions scheme puts a dark cloud over higher education as a whole, even if, as he says, it’s a small number of people abusing the system.
“We want to maintain the integrity and I think that when you have these types of scandals in any sector, whether it’s sports or the financial sector, it’s so rare, but it’s unfortunate because we get cast in a larger shadow,” he said.
During the same event, UW System president Ray Cross says the university has a process that would keep these issues from cropping up in Wisconsin.
“We regularly review our polices and procedures and the way we do that is in itself keeping things like this from happening,” said Cross.
Cross and Mone both striking a more uplifting tone when discussing the new state budget in which Governor Evers pledged an increase in public education funding.
