WAUWATOSA, Wis. — Multiple people were injured after two separate car crashes involving Wauwatosa police officers.
The first happened around 6:05 p.m. on December 7, when police stopped a car for not displaying their license plates near N. Mayfair Road and W. Center Street. During the traffic stop, a ride-share vehicle rear-ended the squad car, which then rolled onto its side before stopping.
Two passengers in the ride-share car were taken to the hospital for their injuries. The driver was evaluated on scene, and the officer did not report any injuries. The squad car, which did have its emergency lights activated during the stop, had significant damage.
Then around 6:55 p.m., Wauwatosa officers responded to W. Bluemound Rd and N. 121 Street for a
single-vehicle crash where a car hit a light pole in the median.
Officers arrested the driver for operating while intoxicated and were helping them get into the back of the squad car around 7:25 p.m. when a passing car struck one of the officers and the arrested driver.
The arrested driver complained of an ankle injury and was taken to the hospital by ambulace. The officer was also evaluated at the hospital, but was released a few hours later.
The striking driver remained on the scene, and told police they were distracted and did not see the emergency vehicles in time to move over. The squad car did have its emergency flashing lights activated.
Both crashes remain under investigation.
