It’s the beginning of a horror movie.
You know the scene.
The brash high schoolers decide to go party in the creepy, decrepid, abandoned house at the edge of the woods in their town.
What could possibly go wrong?
That’s how it felt watching Giannis Antetokounmpo deflect question after question about his unsigned supermax contract extension in speaking with the media on Wednesday afternoon.
We all knew the onslaught was coming…Giannis, his agent, the Bucks, the fans.
And we all knew that Giannis had no answers.
He wasn’t going to break the biggest NBA news of the decade, one way or the other, in a Zoom presser after practice.
Somebody step in and stop this before it’s too late.
Predictably, it was a disaster.
Really Giannis?
You’re not thinking about the 220 million dollars that you can make with one flick of your wrist? You’re just focused on basketball?
Please.
There were even moments when Giannis’ answers may have been perceived as defensive or combative.
Just watch. His responses will be the single biggest sports story in our country day. He’ll be critiqued on every show all day long.
And it was entirely avoidable: Just don’t talk. Keep us all waiting. Drive up the intrigue by doing nothing.
In the end, maybe Giannis will sign his contract and stay in Milwaukee for years to come.
Maybe the horror movie has a happy ending this time.
But he did nothing to instill confidence in the Bucks’ fanbase on Wednesday.
Actually, he did just the opposite.
