A suspect who was shot by Watertown Police during a gunfight Sunday night has died from his injuries, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
The incident began when an officer pulled the suspect over because of a broken tail-light. Police had been searching for the man in connection to a domestic incident.
The officer used a stun gun on the suspect, but the incident quickly escalated, according to the DOJ.
“Shots were fired from within the vehicle and officers returned fire,” a spokesperson said in a news release. Investigators found a firearm inside the vehicle.
Officers attempted to save the suspect’s life and rescue crews took the suspect to a hospital, but he died there.
No one else was injured during the incident. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, according to the DOJ.
The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation is leading an investigation into the shooting.

The State Department of Justice is investigating a police officer-involved shooting in the city of Watertown Sunday night.
According to a release by the DOJ, officers were looking for the man to question him about his involvement in a possible domestic situation. Officers found the man driving a vehicle with a burnt-out taillight, at which point they pulled the vehicle.
Few details are outlined in the DOJ’s news release as to what transpired between officers pulling the vehicle over and an officer firing his service weapon.
The man was shot and taken to a hospital where he remains this morning; his condition is unknown at this time. The person in question is described only as a white male. A handgun was found at the scene.
The officers involved are on administrative leave while the Department of Justice conducts its investigation.
