Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett expressed openness for schools in the City of Milwaukee to open if the city has reached particular health criteria in regards to the current coronavirus pandemic.
Barrett said that Milwaukee Commissioner of Health Jeanette Kowalik will meet with schools to look at possible proposals to open schools for in-person learning.
Last week, the city said that schools could not open for in-person education while the city remains in Phase 4 of re-opening. It would need to reach Phase 5, which would include no need for a recommendation of six-foot physical distancing.

“Public health experts, educators and parents all understand that there are many challenges in preparing for the coming school year. As the severity of the pandemic continues, we must be prepared to address the very legitimate healthcare and educational concerns.
“I would like schools to have the option to open for in person classes this fall, but only if they meet specific criteria and public health authorities feel it is safe. Commissioner Kowalik and her staff will continue to meet with educators to evaluate proposals to return students to school virtually and in-person this fall.”
