NBA legend and Marquette University alum Dwayne Wade had surgery on one of his kidneys, removing a cancerous tumor, the Hall of Famer announced on his podcast.
Wade explained on “The Why with Dwayne Wade” that he had first gone to the doctor because he wasn’t feeling well.
“I just went for physicals, to check on myself,” Wade explained. “And my doctor is like: ‘You need to have kidney surgery.'”
“What??”
The doctors removed 40% of his kidney in December 2023, Wade said. The former Golden Eagle admitted it had been awhile since he had been to a doctor.
Healthcare can be an adjustment for retired athletes, said Mark Tauscher, of ESPN Wisconsin’s Wilde & Tausch.
“When you’re playing (a professional sport), everything is done for you,” the Packers Hall of Famer told WTMJ’s Wis. Morning News on Friday. “You’ve got trainers, doctors, etc. (But when you retire), you have to schedule your own (medical help).”
“Thank God I did do the surgery,” Wade said in the podcast.
