MILWAUKEE— Milwaukee Public Schools is in the middle of a transformation- and officials say the 2025-26 school year could mark a major turning point.
At a recent MPS job fair, recruitment coordinator Jesse Johnsen says the district is looking for people who more to do than just show up for work- they’re looking for mission-driven, passionate and open-minded staff who want to be a part of real change.
“Right now we’re focusing on teacher positions, substitute teachers, paraprofessionals, school nurses, children’s health assistants, and school secretaries. We are hiring specifically bilingual school secretaries right now. We also have a few trades positions, such as carpenter, auto mechanic that we’re attempting to fill right now,” Johnsen said.
From the classroom to student support services, the district is aiming to rebuild from the inside out– focusing not only on filling open positions, but restoring stability, trust, and academic performance.
“We’re looking for somebody who is invested in the community, and most importantly invested in the children, here within the district of Milwaukee Public Schools. If they’re passionate, of course that’s very important. That’s going to show through their work,” Johnsen added.
That rebuilding effort also comes with a shift in culture- something Johnsen says is already taking root.
“I think the culture is on an upswing right now. I think we have a lot of positive things going for us.Obviously we have a new superintendent that we’re all very excited about. We’re really looking forward to the 2025-26 school year. I think it’s a fresh start and I think we have a lot of growing to do, and we’re looking forward to it,” he said.
With a renewed focus on equity, community connection, and school climate, Johnsen says the district sees the 2025-26 year as a true “fresh start”.
“We’re being open with the public and we welcome those who are interested to come and ask questions and learn more about our future plans.”
