It’s bound to be a school year like no other with virtual or hybrid learning models being at the core of many educational institutions this fall.
For some K-12 school districts, Tuesday, September 1st marks the first day of school, others will start September 8th after Labor Day.
Shorewood is one of the districts kicking off a new adventure next week.
Associate Principal of Shorewood High School Joe Patek tell WTMJ that teachers and facility have been working on their Virtual Plus Plan since May.
The model, although mostly online, does include an opportunity for kids to come to campus to meet with teachers and get help with their studies. Patek says precautions will be taken.
“Students are required to wear masks. All staff are required to wear masks. We have a self screener that we are asking everyone to review prior to coming in with a series of questions about symptoms and about contacts with anyone with COVID,” said Patek.
Despite things being so different this year and having dozens of “first-days” under his belt, he says he still gets excited about the first day of school and the teachers do as well.
“Most of us have done this for years or decades and this year is different. It’s that nervous energy about something new, about this idea of us experimenting and getting into this new realm of what does education look like that I think has a lot of people re-energized and really excited about the possibilities about where we’re headed.”
