Wisconsin’s ‘Safer at Home’ orders were lifted last week. But many municipalities have their own orders in place, including Milwaukee.
City leaders say reopening will be gradual.
“It’s going to be a gradual, phased-in approach to reopening,” Milwaukee Common Council President Cavalier Johnson tells WTMJ, “as we look to do that in accordance with guidelines that have been established by the federal reopening metrics, the metrics for opening up America again, as well as the Wisconsin Badger Bounce Back plan that had been in place statewide until the Supreme Court’s action recently.”
Johnson adds that though he understands the want for people to get out of their houses, it’s also bittersweet as we continue to keep the risk top-of-mind.
“Many people in this community that are affected by this don’t survive, and those stories are tragic. It particularly impacts communities of color extremely hard- African American communities, Latino communities and alike. It’s important that we keep that in mind as we look to open up, and desperately want to open up. We also have to make sure that we do it in terms of public safety and public health, so that the most vulnerable among us don’t perish as a result of our desire to go out and get a haircut, for instance.”
