Former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is making headlines this week after getting into an argument with referees at his stepson’s basketball game.
He has since apologized.
“It absolutely is unfortunate,” executive director of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Dave Anderson tells WTMJ.
“But this is education-based athletics and every opportunity to educate, try to form lessons, it’s alright.”
Though this was a high-profile incident, parents berating officials is nothing new.
Anderson says there are nearly 122,000 varsity events across the state each year.
“Most of them go on and go by without talking about,” he says. “But certainly this is one of those, like a youth wrestling event in Kimberly, it rises to a level where people want to look at and hopefully learn from.”
