BROOKFIELD, Wis. — No one was injured after refrigerant leaked from a commercial freezer inside the Target in Brookfield.
The City of Brookfield Fire Department responded around 1:50 p.m. on February 25 to reports of a “hazardous materials release” inside the store near 124th and Bluemound.
Fire crews identified the source as “leaking refrigerant from a large walk-in commercial freezer unit”, and they were able to contain the leak.
Crews did evacuate the store as part of their established hazmat response protocol, and did continuous air quality monitoring before allowing the store to be reopened.
Fire officials say that Target management was working with a licensed contractor on site to complete the necessary mechanical repairs.
