SOUTH MILWAUKEE — No one was injured after a fire damages an apartment complex in South Milwaukee.
Fire crews responded around 9:30 p.m. on February 16 to heavy smoke and fire coming from a front corner window on the first floor of the apartments near S. Chicago Avenue and Columbia Avenue on South Milwaukee’s south side.
The 16-unit apartment is connected to two additional apartment buildings.
Fire crews were able to contain most of the damage to the first floor apartment where they believe the fire started, as well as limited smoke and heat damage to the first floor hallway and a single apartment on the second floor.
While no one was injured, a cat and a turtle were rescued. The cat received oxygen before being reunited with its owner. The turtle was unharmed and also relocated to a safe area of the building.
The fire left the apartment complex without power, heat, and fire alarm protection, impacting 48 residents. The American Red Cross is providing shelter to 7 of those residents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
