MILWAUKEE — Riverside University High School will delay its first day of classes until September 3 as cleanup from a chemical spill continues.
In a letter to families, Milwaukee Public Schools’ Deputy Superintendent Eduardo Galván acknowledges that this will be an inconvenience for families, but is necessary for as “it appears that one factor in the spill might have been old science equipment containing mercury”.
Staff will report for work, but students will delay their first official day of classes until Wednesday, September 3.
Dear Riverside Community,
No students should report tomorrow, Tuesday, September 2, while we work to finish cleanup work after last week’s chemical spill.
We know this is an inconvenience.
We value your health and safety and are happy to report that our building passed its air tests after the spill. However, a few steps remain in the cleanup process and a few classrooms will be closed. (As we shared Friday, while we continue to work to find out exactly what happened, it appears that one factor in the spill might have been old science equipment containing mercury.)
Staff should report to work, and we expect to welcome students on Wednesday, September 3.
Thank you for your patience and support. We look forward to having a great week and a great year!Sincerely,
Eduardo Galván
Deputy Superintendent
The first official day of school for the remainder of Milwaukee Public Schools is Tuesday, September 2.
