Milwaukee Public Schools prep for new school year amid lead and flood repairs

Auer Avenue School

UPDATE at 3:00 p.m. on 8/25/2025: Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Brenda Cassellius joined Wisconsin’s Midday News to talk about her priorities for this first year as the leader of Wisconsin’s largest school district.

MILWAUKEE— Milwaukee Public Schools are gearing up for the start of the school year, tackling a summer of challenges including aging buildings, lead paint abatement, and flood damage.

Superintendent Dr. Brenda Cassellius said the district oversees 156 schools, with an average building age of 89 years- with the national average being 49.

“We โ€‹had โ€‹about 106 โ€‹that โ€‹we โ€‹are โ€‹abating โ€‹with โ€‹lead. โ€‹So โ€‹anticipating โ€‹getting โ€‹through โ€‹50 โ€‹of โ€‹those โ€‹before โ€‹the โ€‹school โ€‹year โ€‹and โ€‹then โ€‹toward โ€‹the โ€‹end โ€‹of โ€‹the โ€‹school โ€‹year โ€‹we’ll โ€‹have โ€‹all โ€‹106 โ€‹done โ€‹and โ€‹cleared. โ€‹We โ€‹had โ€‹22 โ€‹that โ€‹were โ€‹impacted โ€‹by โ€‹the โ€‹floods. โ€‹So โ€‹it’s โ€‹not โ€‹been โ€‹without โ€‹challenge โ€‹this โ€‹summer, โ€‹not โ€‹only โ€‹temperatures, โ€‹but โ€‹also โ€‹the โ€‹big โ€‹flood, and working โ€‹through โ€‹that,” Dr. Cassellius says.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson joined the cleanup at Auer Avenue School, giving the school a hand at preparing for the upcoming school year. His goal alongside MPS is to create a safe and appropriate environment for the students and teachers to return to the schools.

“This โ€‹has โ€‹been โ€‹a โ€‹long, โ€‹long โ€‹running โ€‹partnership โ€‹between โ€‹the โ€‹city โ€‹and โ€‹Milwaukee โ€‹Public โ€‹Schools,” Mayor Johnson said. “From โ€‹day โ€‹number โ€‹one, โ€‹she’s โ€‹taken โ€‹this โ€‹very โ€‹seriously. โ€‹My โ€‹administration โ€‹has โ€‹taken โ€‹it โ€‹very โ€‹seriously. โ€‹The โ€‹health โ€‹department โ€‹in โ€‹my โ€‹administration, โ€‹has โ€‹taken โ€‹it โ€‹very, โ€‹very โ€‹seriously. โ€‹We’ve โ€‹worked โ€‹to โ€‹make โ€‹sure โ€‹that โ€‹schools โ€‹are โ€‹prepared โ€‹for โ€‹kids โ€‹on โ€‹day โ€‹number โ€‹one. โ€‹So โ€‹folks โ€‹should โ€‹make โ€‹sure โ€‹that โ€‹they โ€‹send โ€‹their โ€‹kids โ€‹to โ€‹school โ€‹on โ€‹the โ€‹first โ€‹day โ€‹in โ€‹Milwaukee โ€‹Public โ€‹Schools, โ€‹which โ€‹is โ€‹next โ€‹week, โ€‹Tuesday, โ€‹September โ€‹2nd. โ€‹And โ€‹we’re โ€‹so โ€‹excited โ€‹to โ€‹welcome โ€‹our โ€‹kids โ€‹back โ€‹to โ€‹classrooms.”

Lead and Flood Repairs

The district has completed work in roughly half of the schools needing lead abatement and expects to finish all 106 by the end of the school year.

Dr. Cassellius mentioned that the flood repairs will be finished around the start of the school year.

Deputy Commissioner of Health Michael Mannan emphasized the district’s approach.

“The โ€‹Health โ€‹Department’s โ€‹worked โ€‹with โ€‹both โ€‹the โ€‹Mayor’s โ€‹office โ€‹and โ€‹MPS โ€‹to โ€‹really โ€‹target โ€‹and โ€‹prioritize โ€‹the โ€‹most โ€‹critical โ€‹schools,” Mannan said. “โ€‹The โ€‹youngest โ€‹kids โ€‹first, โ€‹the โ€‹most โ€‹old โ€‹deteriorated โ€‹schools โ€‹first. โ€‹As โ€‹we’ve โ€‹done โ€‹this, โ€‹we’ve โ€‹been โ€‹really โ€‹wise โ€‹in โ€‹it โ€‹so โ€‹that โ€‹we โ€‹handle โ€‹the โ€‹biggest โ€‹problem โ€‹over โ€‹the โ€‹summer โ€‹with โ€‹the โ€‹least โ€‹amount โ€‹of โ€‹impact โ€‹to โ€‹teachers โ€‹and โ€‹to โ€‹parents. โ€‹Our โ€‹work โ€‹isn’t โ€‹done. We โ€‹still โ€‹have โ€‹more โ€‹schools โ€‹to โ€‹do. โ€‹The โ€‹good โ€‹news โ€‹is โ€‹the โ€‹biggest โ€‹hurdle, โ€‹the โ€‹hardest โ€‹part โ€‹is โ€‹done โ€‹and โ€‹now โ€‹the โ€‹rest โ€‹of โ€‹the โ€‹work โ€‹is โ€‹a โ€‹lot โ€‹easier.”

Looking Ahead

Dr. Cassellius said the district is also focused on academic achievement and operational improvements this year. A new literacy plan will go before the school board before the school year to ensure students are reading at grade level.

With repairs underway and classrooms being prepared, MPS leaders say they are ready to welcome students back on September 2.
