SUN PRAIRIE, Wis– The Sun Prairie Board of Education has hired a Milwaukee-area attorney to conduct an independent investigation following the arrest of a former Sun Prairie West High School staff member.
The attorney, who has no prior ties to the district, will review how the high school and Sun Prairie Area School District handled information related to the alleged crimes.
The investigation comes after former dean Robert Gilkey-Meisegeier was charged with two counts of child sexual exploitation and 13 counts of possession of child pornography. A criminal complaint alleges he had sexual contact with students on school grounds and used security cameras to take unauthorized photos.
District officials met with the Dane County District Attorney’s Office and Sun Prairie Police Department to ensure the independent review does not interfere with the ongoing criminal investigation. The district agreed to delay its internal review by two weeks, while the attorney examines available evidence.
The Board of Education says staff will continue training on appropriate boundaries and mandatory reporting requirements. High school students will also receive lessons on healthy boundaries and how to report concerns, with parents and caregivers notified beforehand.
Gilkey- Meisegeier is scheduled for arraignment on September 2nd.
