WAUWATOSA, Wis.— Hart Park was one of the several local spots hit hard by heavy flooding over the weekend. As of Monday, recovery efforts are underway to repair the damage and restore normal conditions.
The football field suffered significant damage, with much of the turf ripped up and one of the goalposts completely twisted around. Nearby, the parking lot adjacent to the football field was destroyed, likely from floodwaters rushing through the area. While some sections of the park still have water seeping through, most areas that were underwater have now dried out and are safe for public use.
The Menomonee River, which runs alongside the park, remains at a high level but has receded from the peak flooding seen over the weekend. In an unusual sight, crayfish have been spotted roaming parts of the park grounds.
Hart Park is just one of many locations in southeast Wisconsin beginning the long process of cleanup and recovery after the recent floods. Residents are advised to exercise caution around damaged areas and watch for updates on park accessibility.
Wauwatosa Mayor, Dennis McBride, joined Wisconsin’s Weekend Morning News to talk about the floods that occurred over the weekend.
“If it’s six inches of water it can sweep a person away,” Mayor Mcbride said. ”If it’s 12 inches of water it can take low lying cars away and 18 inches can sweep away a large vehicle. So people should not underestimate the danger involved and it’s regrettable if a car is stalled out. But take care of people first and we’ll assess the damage and we’ll deal with the damage when we can. But right now we’re in a very serious emergency and people should not try to solve the problem on their own.”
