MILWAUKEE – A new chapter begins for the Mitchell Park Domes.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley signed legislation Wednesday providing $30 million toward the redevelopment and restoration of the iconic facility. The Milwaukee Domes Alliance will take over operations after years of concern and doubt over the future and sustainability of the landmark.
“This is a game changer,” Milwaukee Domes Alliance CEO Christa Beall Diefenbach told WTMJ’s Wis. Morning News on Wednesday. “This is incredibly unprecedented. We’re bringing together all these funding sources so it is not a burden on one source.”
The $133 million plan will rely, in part, on philanthropic efforts. The deal was created to protect the county (and taxpayers) from financial concern. It wasn’t long ago when many feared the facility would ultimately be demolished.
“Certainly we’re not the first to work on this. There have been a lot of community champions (over the years),” Beall Diefenbach said. “We’re excited to have this come together in such a way that we’ll be successful.”
