MILWAUKEE– Of the nine locations for Southeast Wisconsin, the new headquarters for Literary Services of Wisconsin will be based in Milwaukee’s Brewer Hill neighborhood.
Literary Services of Wisconsin provides adult education for those who dropped out of high school and have yet earned a GED.
Executive Director Holly McCoy says the old headquarters location was starting to age.
“The new location is more spacious and the classrooms are better equipped to help with our classes which we were already holding,” said McCoy “Milwaukee Area Technical College is an amazing partner and they have their own designated classroom here. There will be a GED testing center on site, so when students are ready to test, they can do it here instead of us sending them to other locations.”
This past year, 240 students graduated from the program.
Milwaukee County Supervisor for District 8 Steven Shae works as a teacher at Literary Services of Wisconsin and says that students who go through the two to three year program become productive members of society.
“It’s critically important for you to have a GED. There a most jobs out there that you wouldn’t be considered for if you don’t have a high school diploma or a GED,” said Shae. “Every once in a while I will run into one of my former students who are working out in the field and she said that she’s absolutely thankful that I helped her earn that degree and opening the door for future opportunities.”
Shea says that the people who go through the program are not all like and that there are multiple situations in life that have resulted in adults being unable to graduate from high school. Shea hopes that students who attend LSW can earn their GED can be lead to jobs and perhaps other education opportunities.
