MILWAUKEE – Acting Milwaukee Police Chief Michael Brunson is confirming that his department has launched an internal review of Officer Michael Mattioli, taking over the process once again from the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission.
“It means that we’re going to handle the internal investigation, which is common,” Brunson told WTMJ’s Mike Spaulding.
“It’s what we do. He’s our member. And so we’re going to move forward with that investigation and render appropriate discipline, if it comes to that.”
Acting Chief Brunson says he hopes to have a resolution by the end of September.
“Investigations can vary, depending on the number of individuals we have to interview, that sort of thing,” Brunson said.
“But I think that looking forward, we can come to some type of resolution within the month.”
Mattioli is facing a charge of 1st Degree Reckless Homicide related to the death of Joel Acevedo in April of this year.
Mattioli reportedly put Acevedo in a choke hold during an argument at Mattioli’s home. Acevedo died from his injuries the following week.
