“Well, I would say it’s the unofficial start. We have camping year round at some of our properties. But really Memorial day is the big kick off.” says Chris Pedretti, Business operations section chief with the Wisconsin Bureau of Parks and Recreation.
He says this weekend marks the point at which all the state campgrounds hit the ground running.
“All the properties are open and running 100% and it’s busy. So it definitely is a great start to the summer season. And we expect to be busy and a lot of people out having a great time.” says Pedretti.
You may be roughing it when you’re out there in a tent or camper, but that doesn’t mean that technology can’t still be a part of the experience.
A new reservation system the department launched at the very end of last year and it’s got great features, ranging from finding group sites to finding electric or RV sites. And this year some properties have got a new feature.
“We’re doing a pilot program at 15 properties for same day reservations. So now, people can actually make reservations before they ever leave their house on the same day. So if you want to go camping on a Saturday night, Saturday morning you can see what’s available and make that reservation from home and be assured that you have a reservation before you ever arrive at the park.” explains Pedretti.
You used to have to reserve at least 48 hours ahead of time. But you can reserve up to 11 months ahead of your planned trip.
Folks to camp are really innovative and imaginative. From rigging up outdoor showers to a full kitchen set up. Whether it’s putting out your welcome sign and stringing up lights or the different vehicles converted to imaginative campers, it’s about making the campsite your own.
We all know the Wisconsin outdoors is a beautiful gem of the region of the country, and Wisconsinites love heading out into nature, but don’t kid yourself, we’re a destination for folks from all over the world!
Pedretti says, “Every year, we generally have representation from almost every state. We get a number of folks coming down from Canada, folks from Africa, Asia… different countries that have come over and camped in Wisconsin.”
And why not?! Not only are we in a gorgeous area of the country, but each property has events and activities to experience even more.
If you’re interested in what each campground has to offer, Pedretti suggests talking with the folks in the office to see what’s on tap. And there’s such a variety of things depending on the area of the state. Nature walks and talks with naturalists and rangers can make your vacation educational.
So check out the new reservation system and pack up the tent or camper and get out there this Memorial Day weekend.
