The president of the Milwaukee Common Council has made an official step to run for the city’s chief executive office.
Alderman Ashanti Hamilton has filed for the 2020 race for Milwaukee Mayor according to a campaign registration statement filed with the city’s election commission, as cited by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
That election is scheduled for April 7 of that year.
The filing does not automatically mean he will run for mayor, but it is a key step towards a run.
Longtime Mayor Tom Barrett has not yet declared his election campaign or if he will run, according to the newspaper. Alderman Tony Zielinski has said he is running, and has called for a debate with Hamilton and Mayor Barrett.
