A report says that the City of Milwaukee Arts Board wants to run an official search for a new flag for the city, all after the initial organically-viral non-government brainstorming for the “people’s flag” which led to a the “sunrise” flag that has now become popular throughout the city.
UrbanMilwaukee.com says that the board is asking for a new process to decide on the city’s flag. The search could cost more than $100,000.
The initial search was open to the public with events held at City Hall, but government officials were not part of the final decision process.
“We decided, although they did a very good job and they’re to be commended for the work they did, it was not inclusive enough. We would like to see something better done if the city is going to put their name on it,” subcommittee chair Bill Delind told UrbanMilwaukee.
Other committee members told the site that there was a “lack of bilingual information, a perceived shortcoming in outreach to the city’s African American population and potential issues with the lack of citywide awareness around the contest.”
