Why Wisconsin’s Democratic primary for governor is unprecedented

Political scientist and longtime Wisconsin political analyst Mordecai Lee joined Wisconsin’s Weekend Morning News to discuss what he called an unprecedented gubernatorial primary. Lee pointed to Wisconsin’s plurality voting system, which allows a candidate to win a crowded primary without earning a majority of the vote, as a key reason the race has become so volatile. With several competitive candidates splitting support, he said it’s possible the eventual Democratic nominee could secure the nomination with only about a quarter of the vote.

The conversation also touched on campaign finance, crossover voting in Wisconsin’s open primary system, and whether absentee voters who cast ballots for candidates who later withdrew should be allowed to vote again. While acknowledging the unusual circumstances surrounding the race, Lee said the election is likely to be decided by which candidate can energize their base while also appealing to the state’s crucial bloc of independent and moderate voters.
