MILWAUKEE — State Sen. Kelda Roys said Wisconsin Democrats need a gubernatorial nominee voters can trust after campaign finance problems upended Sara Rodriguez’s campaign.
Roys, a Democratic candidate for governor, joined WTMJ’s Wisconsin’s Afternoon News after Rodriguez fired her Campaign Manager for errors in financial reporting. Roys said its not her place to say whether Rodriguez should drop out of the race, but argued the party needs to “focus” on how to “beat Tom Tiffany and deliver a Democratic legislature and then most importantly, bring the change that Wisconsinites need.”
Roys said she noticed problems in Rodriguez’s January finance report within minutes, citing duplicate entries. She declined to speculate on whether the issues were innocent mistakes or something more serious, while defending her own campaign finances.
“I have run five campaigns. I cannot imagine not having not having basic financial safeguards in place,” Roys said.
Ahead of Wednesday’s campaign finance filing deadline, Roys said that her campaign has raised $1.2 million and that the state of the race has changed significantly.
“Obviously now we are in a complete different place in this race and our fundraising trajectory has changed markedly,” Roys said. “There’s obviously quite a lot more interest in some supporting my campaign.”
