WAUWATOSA, Wis. — The Wauwatosa Common Council approved a $95,000 settlement in a worker’s compensation deal with former police officer Joseph Mensah.
The council’s unanimous vote Tuesday night comes after Mensah claimed disability due to experiencing extraordinary stress as an officer.
Mensah was involved in three separate deadly on-duty shootings between 2015 and 2020, including the death of 17-year-old Alvin Cole at Mayfair Mall that sparked protests in Wauwatosa in the summer of 2020. The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office never charged Mensah in any of the deaths.
The $95,000 claim will be paid through Wauwatosa’s workers’ compensation fund. When Mensah left the police department in 2020, the city paid him $125,000 in a separation agreement.
After resigning from the Wauwatosa Police Department in 2020, Mensah was hired at the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department before ultimately quitting law enforcement last year.
