GREENFIELD, Wis. — Greenfield Mayor Michael Neitzke has formally filed a statement of charges to remove Police Chief Jay Johnson.
According to a statement released by the City of Greenfield Wednesday, the common council unanimously decided to seek Johnson’s removal “for the good of the police service.”
Johnson is currently involved in court proceedings for alleged misconduct where he had a city-owned surveillance camera installed outside of his home in Wind Lake, then repeatedly attempted to erase data related to the case.
He faces four felony charges and one misdemeanor:
- Felony misconduct in public office
- Two felony computer-crime charges, including allegedly impairing government operations and destroying data
- Felony bail jumping
- Misdemeanor obstructing an officer
The statement also reads “charges seeking Chief Johnson’s removal are necessary to protect Greenfield residents, our Police Department and employees,” and that “the City’s investigation revealed numerous concerning findings.”
Johnson is entitled to file a rebuttal against the allegations at a hearing. He has five business days to review the charges before they become public record.
He was initially placed on paid administrative leave in April of 2025.
The charges will have to go before the Police and Fire Commission to determine if Johnson will be removed, and if not, what other disciplinary action he may face.
