MADISON, Wis.— Wisconsin health officials are reporting more cases of the stomach illness cyclosporiasis, with more than 100 infections confirmed across the state this season.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, 105 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported as of July 22, including three hospitalizations.
Most of the reported cases have been linked to international travel.
However, state health officials say 20 confirmed cases involved people who did not travel outside the United States during the two weeks before becoming sick. Those cases are considered domestically acquired, but investigators have not identified a common food source.
The Department of Health Services says there are no active Cyclospora outbreaks in Wisconsin, and none of the state’s cases have been linked to outbreaks in other states.
How to Protect Yourself
- Wash your hands, utensils, and food preparation surfaces before and after handling and preparing raw produce.
- Rinse all fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating, cutting, or cooking. Use a clean produce brush to scrub firmer produce.
- Cut away any damaged or bruised areas on produce before preparing and eating.
- Refrigerate cut, peeled, or cooked fruits and vegetables as soon as possible or within two hours.
- Cook produce when appropriate.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says continuing to follow proper food practices can help reduce the risk of illness.
