MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Police Department has released data for the second quarter, showing an overall decrease is most types of crime.
Non-fatal shootings, carjackings, and homicides have all decreased around 30% from this time last year.
Fatal injuries have decreased 17%.
Crashes and hit-and-runs have increased, however, both by under 10%. Overall theft is up 3%.
Despite the violence over the July Fourth weekend, in which two Milwaukee Police Officers were injured, MPD says crime for the holiday is down 14% from last year.
The homicide clearance rate is 98%.
“I’m very proud that our clearance rate for violent crime is well above national trends. This is a testament to the tireless work of the men and women of the police department,” says Police Chief Jeffrey Norman. “Let’s continue to keep an eye out for each other. If you see problems or conflicts escalating community, let someone know.”
Milwaukee County Sheriff Denita Ball reported crime has decreased by 5%, a number she says is too low for her standards.
“I said that it’s disappointing because of all the time and effort that we have put into areas of responsibility. To show such a
small decrease was a little disheartening for us,” says Ball.
On the county level, total thefts saw a major drop, down 16 incidents compared to last year.
