IRON RIVER, Mich.— Former Green Bay Packers player James Michael Flanigan Jr. has died unexpectedly, according to his obituary.
Flanigan, 80, of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and Tavernier, Florida, passed away the day after Christmas in Iron River, Michigan.
Born April 15, 1945, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Flanigan graduated from West Mifflin High School in 1963 and later earned his degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1967.
Flanigan was drafted by the Green Bay Packers and played three-and-a-half seasons with the team before continuing his NFL career with the New Orlean Saints.
Flanigan was with the Packers when the team won the second Super Bowl in 1968. He was drafted by the team as a second-round pick in 1967.
Following his retirement from professional football, Flanigan became a longtime business owner in Door County. He operated Whispering Sands Resort in Sturgeon Bay alongside his family and ran Flanigan Distributing Inc. for nearly 50 years.
On June 1, 1968, Flanigan married Susan Moudy, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The couple recenlty celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
Flanigan is has a long track record of players in his family, including his son, James Flanigan III. His son played for the Packers in 2001, after being drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1994.
