BROOKFIELD- The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department says a high speed chase eastbound on I-94 that ended in a crash was the reason I-94 was closed down for several hours overnight.
According to the police report, the high speed chase began after a deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle they estimate was traveling in excess of 90 miles an hour. The chase continued eastbound on I-94 until reaching Highway 100, at which point the suspects car lost control and crashed into a Brookfield Police squad car.
The officer was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The suspect, identified only as a 23-year-old man from the Madison area, was arrested at the scene of the crash without further incident.
The highway was closed in both directions for about 3 hours as crews cleaned up debris. The crash is still under investigation. Formal charges have not been filed.
