Some Milwaukee streets are being shut down to vehicle traffic in anticipation of protests on Saturday.
The city’s Department of Public Works says that as of 9:30 a.m., motor vehicles will not be allowed to travel east or west on Center Street at MLK Drive.
Starting at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, all north-south traffic will be shut down on MLK Drive from Center Street to North Avenue.
These closures will remain in effect for the rest of the weekend.
DPW says the closures “are a safety measure to deter vehicular traffic from MLK Drive.”
Police are also warning of possible closures in Whitefish Bay and Shorewood beginning around 1:00 p.m.
The Whitefish Bay Police Department says three different protests are expected to start around that time, one in Whitefish Bay, one in Shorewood and one in Milwaukee.
Those protests are expected to affect vehicular traffic on Lake Drive, Silver Spring Road, Hampton Road and Santa Monica Boulevard.
In a written statement, the Whtiefish Bay Police Department wrote, “Our policing plan is to facilitate the marches to allow the participants to exercise their right to protest. We will do what we can to see that their marches are a safe and fulfilling event. We fully anticipate that any activity in Whitefish Bay will occur in a safe and respectful manner.”
