Like many businesses and industries, Major League Baseball is trying to understand what pathway it needs to use to safely return to business.
Reports say that for the 2020 season, it is considering dropping the traditional American and National League format and switching to a three-division regional format with 10 teams in each division.
“I think that’s the most feasible one that has been to date,” said WTMJ Brewers voice Jeff Levering on WTMJ’s “Wisconsin’s Afternoon News.”
“The three divisions…that’s the one that makes the most sense. It restricts travel problems. You get your own ballparks. You get to travel very, very lightly.”
Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY reports the Brewers’ division could include:
– Atlanta Braves
– Chicago Cubs
– Chicago White Sox
– Cincinnati Reds
– Cleveland Indians
– Detroit Tigers
– Kansas City Royals
– Minnesota Twins
– St. Louis Cardinals
Except for Atlanta, such a format would allow for every Brewers road game to be within a 10-hour drive of Milwaukee.
“It makes sense, but the biggest thing is safety. Is it safe for everyone to move forward. If it is, it’s as good a plan as they’ve come up with,” said Levering.
MLB is not yet at a stage where it is ready to create a plan. All five American sports league and all of college sports has taken a break to make sure people stay socially distant and avoid contracting coronavirus.
