(UPDATE at 8:45 p.m. 4/13/26) MILWAUKEE — A 31-year-old homicide suspect was killed by police after a chase and crash ended with a shootout on the city’s south side.
The 31-year-old man was wanted in connection to a homicide near 7th and Mitchell St. early Monday morning, according to Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman.
The suspect vehicle was later involved in a shots fired incident around 4:45 p.m. Monday, at which point Milwaukee Police began a pursuit. The suspect fled officers, then crashed into multiple vehicles on 35th Street near National Avenue.
The shootout with police began when the suspect exited his vehicle:
“The suspect exited his vehicle and fired shots… At which time, several officers returned fire, subsequently striking the suspect,” Chief Norman said.
No one else was struck by gunfire and no officers were injured. A 34-year-old in one of the other cars struck by the suspect vehicle was taken to the hospital for injuries.
Police recovered at least two guns at the scene.
The officer-involved shooting happened on the same day that Milwaukee leaders touted first-quarter data that shows overall crime is trending down this year.
“Statistics can measure trends over time, but they do not capture what happens in real time on our streets – the danger, the volatility, and the split-second decisions officers are required to make when confronting violent offenders,” the Milwaukee Police Association said in a post on social media.
Eight officers who discharged their firearms during Monday’s shootout have been placed on administrative duty. They range in age from 26 years old to 35 years old, with 7 months to 14 years of service.
The Wauwatosa Police Department is leading the investigation.
