MILWAUKEE — After years of back and forth between lawmakers in Madison, Governor Tony Evers has signed a bill that expands postpartum Medicaid coverage for new moms in Wisconsin.
The governor signed the bill Wednesday morning at Children’s Wisconsin in Milwaukee. It expands coverage from 60 days to a full year for low-income families starting in July.
“It’s no secret that Wisconsin has some of the worst disparities when it comes to Black maternal and birth outcomes, as well as overall health and wellbeing for Black women and women of color in our state,” said Evers. “It’s something my administration has spent seven years working to improve.”
“Research has shown that expanding postpartum coverage leads to improved maternal and birth outcomes, thanks to more folks being able to access the care they need when they need it, and without breaking the bank,” Evers said.
Wisconsin had been just one of two states to not expand postpartum coverage.
Arkansas is now the only state to not expand coverage to a full year.
