UPDATE 10/22/24 at 8:00 p.m. — A lag in the WisVote system was the reason for technical issues in communities including Glendale on Tuesday.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) said a higher voter turnout than expected on the first day of absentee in-person voting caused the delays. The period of slowness has now been resolved.
According to WEC, clerks use WisVote to print a label that can be placed on the outside of absentee certificate envelopes. That same information can be affixed manually with a pen.
“Today’s system lag was purely related to demands on the WisVote system due to high turnout,” WEC said in a press release.
The system lag should not impact voters’ ability to vote in-person absentee over the next early voting days.
GLENDALE, Wis. — On Day One of in-person absentee voting in several Wisconsin communities, tech problems have arisen in the City of Glendale.
The city says the Wisconsin Election Commission system used for in-person absentee voting is experiencing severe delays and periodic outages.
Residents tell WTMJ they were told by the clerk they could come back later, stay and wait it out, or ask for an absentee ballot to be mailed to them.
The city did not offer a timeline for when the delays and outages might be fixed but did note they plan to continue offering in-person absentee voting until November 1st at City Hall.
City clerk Megan Humitz has been in touch with the state regarding the technical issues, and is processing more than 100 absentee ballot requests made today because of the difficulties.
