April 17: Performing Arts
Outdoor entertainment is a staple of the Wisconsin summer. For locals, it’s a chance to socialize and enjoy the warmer weather; for out-of-towners, it provides a unique glimpse into Wisconsin’s laid-back, friendly culture.
American Players Theatre- Spring Green
An internationally known Shakespearean company, the American Players Theatre, is one of the most popular outdoor classical theaters in the country and seats 1,147 attendees.
- Arrive early to share a meal. Bring your own food or order everything from picnic dinners to barbecues to be picked-up upon arrival.
- The 2019 season will feature Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” and “Macbeth” along with “The Man of Destiny” by George Bernard Shaw and “A Doll’s House” by Henrick Ibsen, among others. The eight-show lineup runs from June 8 to Oct. 6.
- To celebrate the 40th, a collection of 12 commissioned art installations from regional artists called “Art in the Woods” will be placed throughout the 110-acre property, with the art exhibition debuting on July 21 at APT’s anniversary celebration.
Northern Sky Theater- Fish Creek
Northern Sky Theater in Door County is a critically acclaimed professional theatre presenting family-friendly original musicals under a canopy of stars in Peninsula State Park.
- This is a great family night out, as all summer shows are appropriate for all ages and run about 90 minutes with no intermission.
- The musicals are often Wisconsin originals, including “Dairy Heirs”, a modern-day farming musical.
- They sell water, soda, popcorn and sweet treats at their concession stand.
- Peninsula State Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the country. Spend the day hiking, biking or beaching before you head to Northern Sky.
- There are plenty of picnic tables and grills close by at Nicolet Beach, and even several tables right outside the amphitheater.
Big Top Chautauqua-Lake Superior
In Northern Wisconsin, Big Top Chautauqua presents a summer season of concerts, plays, and lectures in its intimate 900-seat, state-of-the-art tent/theater.
- This hidden gem is located off the beaten path but well worth the trip. The big blue tent welcomes folks who make the drive up the hill between Bayfield and Washburn County.
- The venue offers original historical musical theater based on local history and culture as well as national and regional touring musicians.
- Families and couples get together at the picnic tables for barbeque and burgers, locally grown produce and Wisconsin brews before heading into the tent.
- On balmy summer nights the tent sidewalls can be lifted and people can choose to sit outside on the surrounding hillside and gaze at the clear night sky as they listen to the show.
