Pregame story
Yes, the Green Bay Packers finally own the advantage in the oldest rivalry in pro football – a one-game lead on the Chicago Bears after nearly 100 years.
Yes, they have won 21 of the last 26 games on Illinois soil.
However, none of those wins were without Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers. The latter legend at quarterback will be out Sunday with the broken collarbone that has him out indefinitely…and without him, the Packers without a win.
Brett Hundley will have his fourth game at the helm. His Packers have lost the previous three, but perhaps more due to the defense than his own mistakes.
In the previous four contests, the Packers have given up more than 27 points per game.
In the last 11 games without Rodgers as the primary quarterback – encompassing 2013 and 2017 – the Packers’ defense has given up more than 29 points per game.
Perhaps that’s an illogical cause and effect. Or perhaps it’s more of a reflection of the issues the Packers have faced on defense the last seven years since their Super Bowl win in February 2011, when they were ranked among the sport’s best.
For Green Bay to even have a breath of a chance of making the playoffs without Rodgers, that defense must improve.
In fact, this game will decide if the Packers finally fall into the realm of the losers…as they are 4-4 and on a downward trajectory.
What a day it would be for a turnaround to happen against their most-played, most passionate and most historic rival.
Stay tuned.
