Local actor Andrew Varela stars in Skylight Music Theatre’s production of Gypsy as Herbie.
Joining WTMJ’s What’s On Tap, he tells Sandy Maxx about his journey from Broadway to Milwaukee. Varela shares his stories of meeting Brewers legends Robin Yount and Paul Molitor, and his wife Susan Varela’s appearance in the 1989 film Major League.
Varela has had the honor of singing the national anthem at dozens of Milwaukee Brewers games and shares his experiences.
He goes on to explain the premise of Gypsy, following the rise of performer Gypsy Rose Lee. Skylight Music Theatre’s production features an unusual cast of live animals, including a sheep and a miniature poodle. Gypsy‘s final show is on Sunday, October 18th.
Varela also discusses Milwaukee’s theater community, Milwaukee Theater Week, and the teamwork that connects the arts and sports. He previews Skylight Music Theatre’s upcoming events, including a free pop-up performance behind Turner Hall, Gallery Night activities, and Big the Musical.
