“The Future of Almost Everything” is back this week on The Upswing, and WTMJ’s Jeff Sherman and Martin Moore have a lot to discuss, from broadcast TV to streaming, from murals to why we do what we do.
They begin with the existential question of their general feelings about the future, especially with artificial intelligence on the rise, and whether it’s time for what Jeff calls a “return to IRL.”
Netflix is at an interesting point in its product cycle, with many subscribers becoming less interested in the second season of their shows and a shift towards shorter-form video. Moore points out that it could be a lack of promotion and advertising for new seasons and shows, all the while the streaming platform looks to become more like YouTube for growth, but can they do it?
Meanwhile, broadcast television is getting a boon, with the Milwaukee Bucks returning to local TV on MY24. Moore says that coming to local TV could be a much-needed boost for the franchise, with Giannis’ departure becoming less of a draw for new fans to show up at Fiserv Forum.
They also look deeper into the future of why people like Jeff and Martin actually do the things they do.
Pivoting back to the Bucks and a larger discussion on murals. The two agree that Giannis’ mural downtown should stay because of the profound impact he has made on the city that drafted him. To that end, Jeff posed something to Martin: Milwaukee has a lot of murals dedicated to famous men, but not many dedicated to famous women. Jeff gives some ideas to Martin, who in turn gives some lesser-known ideas for possible new celebrity murals in downtown Milwaukee.
Their conversation concluded with the state of nonfiction. Is it dying because of AI or the rise of podcasts?
The Upswing is presented by Horicon Bank.
