A witness-recorded video of a fatal Madison police shooting is fueling public debate over police use of force and the city’s lack of officer body cameras.
According to Madison police, officers were responding to reports of a man attempting to steal bicycles or check vehicle doors when they encountered the suspect. Witness video shows officers taking the man to the ground before an officer fires three shots. Police say the footage does not capture a critical moment in which the man allegedly pulled a fixed-blade knife and injured an officer. A knife was later recovered at the scene, and Police Chief John Patterson urged the public not to draw conclusions based on a single camera angle.
The incident has sparked protests and renewed scrutiny of Madison’s decision not to equip patrol officers with body cameras. City leaders previously rejected funding for a broader body camera program, but Chief Patterson says he will again seek funding as part of the 2027 budget. The four officers involved in the encounter have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
