LAS VEGAS, Nv. — It should come as no surprise that when a Major League Baseball team wins the World Series, the phone calls start coming to those in the team’s front office from other organizations eager to offer a role with their club.
The Milwaukee Brewers are not immune to the norm, with their senior vice president of player development and performance Cam Castro heading west to join the Athletics organization as its next general manager.
“The A’s are a historic franchise with an incredible legacy,” Castro said in a statement November 4. “I look forward to being a part of the next chapter of A’s baseball and developing a team, culture, and organization that our fans will be proud of.”
“Cam will be an awesome addition to the front office and a great partner to me in running this organization,” added Athletics president of baseball operations Taylor Smith in the statement. “He has experiences and skillsets that will complement me and the very talented people that we already have in the organization. He’s one of the best development minds in the game with a proven track record of building the systems and processes that develop a winner.”
Castro joined the Brewers organization as a minor league pitching coach with the Class-A Carolina Mudcats in 2019 and worked his way up the ranks developing young arms before joining the major league staff as director of pitching development in 2021. His time pre-pro ball included managing the Lake Erie College baseball team and an assistant coach role at Augustana University.
He will join an organization still trying to find its footing after departing Oakland in 2024. The team is due to play its final season in Sacramento’s Triple-A Sutter Health Ballpark next year before fully moving to Las Vegas in 2028. Former GM David Frost parted ways mutually with the team in August.
Castro appears to not be the only Brewers front officer staff member to be approached by another organization. MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy reported Milwaukee’s assistant general manager Matt Kleine was courted by the Houston Astros to be their next general manager, but Kleine declined the offer.
