MILWAUKEE — Due to the excessive heat predicted for Wednesday, September 2, Milwaukee Public Schools has decided to close schools.
This includes the cancellation of all after-school, recreation, and athletic programs and activities.
In a letter to 620 WTMJ, school district officials say school-based staffers will also not be reporting to work, while Central Services and administrative staff will report to work.
Dear MPS Families and Staff,
Your health and safety is our highest priority. We appreciate your partnership and understanding as we work to make the best possible decisions with continued hot weather in the forecast for tomorrow.
With this in mind, Milwaukee Public Schools will be closed Wednesday, September 2, 2026, due to excessive heat predicted.
In keeping with guidance from the Milwaukee Health Department, all schools will be closed and school-based staff should not report to work. (Those staff who did not complete required training on August 31 and have computer access at home can complete this training tomorrow.)
Central Services and all administrative buildings will be open and staff at those sites should report to work.
All MPS before and after-school, recreation, and athletic programs are cancelled.

The announcement comes as MPS finishes its first day of the 2026-2027 academic year, with Governor Tony Evers visiting the students from Lincoln Avenue School attending classes at Pulaski High School after their building was destroyed by fire in June.
