MILWAUKEE — All 34 Lincoln Avenue School teachers received a bin of school supplies to start the upcoming school year, as part of the drive from the Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation.
The bins, valued at around $500, contain everything from posterboard and markers, to kinetic sand.
“We ​decided ​that ​we ​wouldn’t ​be ​presumptive ​about ​what ​teachers ​needed. ​We ​actually ​​surveyed ​teachers. They ​told ​us ​what ​teachers ​were ​interested ​in ​getting, and we ​paired ​that ​down ​to ​something ​that ​we ​thought ​all ​teachers ​would ​need,” says Myra Edwards, Executive Director of the Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation.
The school is no longer accepting physical supplies, but is always taking monetary donations.
The students and staff have been relocated to a space inside of Casimir Pulaski High School in southwest Milwaukee. Reports say they have not seen a drop in enrollment in the aftermath of the fire.
“I ​think ​that ​this ​school ​community ​is ​so ​close ​knit. So ​that ​they ​were ​able ​to ​come ​almost ​intact, speaks to ​how ​it ​doesn’t ​matter ​what ​the ​building ​is. ​It ​matters ​that ​the ​school ​community ​stays ​together. ​I ​think ​that’s ​a ​beautiful ​thing,” says Edwards.
