MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Police District 2 is hosting a school supply drive to support students of Lincoln Avenue Elementary, after a massive fire in June left the building a total loss.
MPD says they hope to collect over 250 backpacks filled with school supplies. The students and teachers are in need of both classroom supplies, such as wipes, tissues, staplers, and more, as well as supplies for students, such as crayons, markers, pencils, construction paper, etc.
“​We ​grew ​up ​on ​the ​south ​side. ​We ​have ties ​to ​the ​school, even ​if ​we ​didn’t ​attend ​the ​school ​growing ​up,” says Delian ​Mendez ​Santiago, Community Liaison Officer. “It’s ​not ​just ​us ​that has ​ties ​to ​it. ​It’s ​a ​lot ​of ​the ​members ​of ​the ​Milwaukee ​Police ​Department ​that ​have ​ties ​to ​the ​school ​or have done ​some ​type ​of ​community ​event ​there ​where ​they ​were ​getting ​closer ​to ​these ​children. ​Growing ​up ​on ​the ​south ​side, ​​being ​part ​of ​MPS, ​it ​just ​feels ​right ​to ​be ​able ​to ​give ​back ​to ​the ​community ​that ​gave ​me ​so ​much.”
The donation bins can be found at every Milwaukee Police District. There’s also a QR code to scan to make a monetary donation.
“If ​people ​are ​able ​to ​donate, ​​please ​donate. ​Any ​little ​bit ​will ​help ​​in ​the ​end. ​We ​just ​want ​to ​be ​able ​to ​give anything ​back ​to ​them,” says Carissa Sanchez, MPD Community Liaison Officer.
The drive runs through August 24. All the donations will be given directly to the school’s students and teachers at a later date.
