MADISON, Wis.— With Wisconsin’s primary election approaching, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is reminding voters to make sure they have an approved form of identification before heading to the polls.
The Division of Motor Vehicles says voters do not need a REAL ID to cast a ballot. However, Wisconsin law requires voters to present an acceptable form of photo identification, such as a Wisconsin driver’s license or state ID.
Residents who need their first Wisconsin ID are encouraged to begin the application process online before visiting a DMV Customer Service Center. Appointments are available but are not required.
The DMV also says eligible U.S. citizens who apply for an ID but do not receive it before Election Day can obtain a receipt that may be used for voting purposes.
Officials encourage voters to review the list of acceptable IDs and required application documents before visiting a DMV office.

The primary begins August 11.
