MILWAUKEE — A woman from Milwaukee has been charged with shooting a 12-year-old boy and leading police on a high-speed chase with multiple children in the car.
According to a criminal complaint, 33-year-old Cosetta Burrell shot the boy while he was selling water bottles in the median near 60th and Silver Spring Drive last Friday.
The criminal complaint alleges that the victim was in a fight with Burrell’s son, and several other children. The 12-year-old victim said he had “got the better” of some of the kids, without getting hit very much himself. Burrell also alleged that her son had been bullied by the victim in the week prior.
After shooting the boy, Burrell drove off in a car that was stolen from a friend.
The Milwaukee Police identified the car through Flock camera. However, when they attempted to pull it over, Burrel lead police on a nearly 6 mile car chase, topping speeds over 83 mph.
She was eventually stopped and taken into custody. Burrell had four minor children in the car with her, who were crying and visibly shaken, but not injured.
In custody, Burrell told police she had been released from prison a week prior. She told police the children were her son, nephew, and two of their friends.
During the interview, she also told police she was in “GTA mode,” and that she was “trying to scare him, not kill him.” She also threw the gun out the window while driving, and said “that she didn’t think officers saw that.”
She faces 22 felony and misdemeanor charges, including reckless injury, child abuse, neglect, and bail jumping. Each charge also carries a repeat offense clause.
Her bond was been set to $100,000 and she’s due back in court next Tuesday.
