MILWAUKEE –A Sound the Alarm event was lead by community leaders installing free smoke detectors across the city.
The Red Cross says having a working smoke alarm reduces the risk of dying in a house fire by half.
“There ​will ​never ​be ​a ​better ​rescue ​than ​the ​rescue ​that ​doesn’t ​have ​to ​happen ​because ​people ​were ​able ​to ​get ​out ​of ​a ​home ​on ​their ​own.,” says Fire Chief Aaron Lipski.
The Red Cross responds to five fires a week, almost a fire every day in Milwaukee County.
“It’s ​important ​for ​the ​alarms ​to ​go ​off, ​knowing ​there’s ​a ​fire ​without ​being ​able ​to ​see ​it. It’s ​important. ​Saves ​lives ​for ​sure,” says Second Baseman Brice Turang, a California-native, who helped install the alarms.
