WEST ALLIS, Wis. — The cases against two men charged with felony murder for the 2012 death of a West Allis teenager after a gas station shoplifting attempt were dismissed on Monday.

Robert Beringer and Jesse Cole completed the terms of their deferred prosecution agreements, which required them not to commit any new crimes and to complete six months of community service. They pled guilty to felony murder charges filed in January 2026, and a judge vacated their convictions on July 13.

The two men admitted to restraining 16-year-old Corey Stingley after the teenager allegedly tried to steal alcohol from a gas station convenience store. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner ruled that Stingley died from a lack of oxygen.

Beringer and Cole were not charged at the time of the crime because prosecutors determined the men weren’t trained in proper restraint techniques and had no intention to kill Singley, calling his death an accident. A third man involved in Stingley’s death, Mario Laumann, died in 2022.
